Do
What I Can -
I certainly never imagined that I would find myself in the role of
'caregiver', but when my husband's grandparents needed some extra help,
that's just what I became. The
occasional trip to the grocery store turned into full-time,
round-the-clock care after five years.
I definitely never imagined that we would become such close
friends, nor that I would learn so much about myself in the process.
It was the most challenging and most rewarding thing I have ever
done. This song is dedicated
to my buddy, Bonnie Gene Norrod. |

One
Life - The song
"One Life" was inspired by and written in memory of my
grandmother, Stella Noel. The
words to the song speak to the many ways she touched those of us fortunate
enough to know her! Thanks Gram! |

Everything
Good - I was heading on
a ferry to Vashon Island, WA on a very rainy evening. I was off to meet a
friend of mine who is an EMT for a Seattle Ambulance service. She has an
interesting job, saving lives every day. Every time we get together she
tells me some amazing story: a car accident, a HWY birth or an elderly
person who's time had come. It always makes me think about our time here,
of how amazing we all are to survive and how one little decision can
change your whole life. It is a blessing and a wonder how we all get
through. |

A
Few Seconds With My Father - A true
story...the song seemed to write itself and I was able to release some
pent-up emotions about missing my Dad and caring for my aging Mom... seems
like a lot of my friends are going through this same situation. |

Juice
In My Coffee - 'Juice In My
Coffee' was inspired by and co-written with Paul Vincent, who's both a
client and volunteer for CareGivers. Paul has an incredibly positive
attitude, wonderful sense of humor and a keen sense for finding the good
in everyone's heart. He's also a great storyteller and was kind enough to
share his personal anecdotes. |

George
- George and I shared a semi-private hospital room. He was in for a broken
hip and a stroke and spent most of his time staring out the window. Most
of the folks on the fourth floor seemed to be waiting for nursing home or
hospice space to open up, but not all made it. My girlfriend brought me
flowers -- I never saw any of George's family so I left the flowers for
him when I checked out. |

People
Who Care - One positive of
humanity is that people generally have an innate sense of fairness,
without which morals and justice would not be possible.
But dedicated caregivers transcend even beautiful justice, acting
rather out of mercy, when care is needed, not only when deserved.
Hope for humanity to come depends on following their example,
letting go of righteous obsessions with justice, and helping when
possible, out of mercy rather than fairness. |

Right
There - It's about a pridefully
humble man who polished floors in the Critical Care Unit where I worked.
He had a knack for engaging people and making them smile, and never failed
to say hello to a passerby. His joy was contagious and his compassion for
patients was genuine. |

Evidence
- This song was inspired by my step-daughter.
Having been brought into this world at a time when her parents
were struggling with issues and unable to raise her, I became her primary
caregiver. She is evidence that one bright, young, human spirit is
stronger than anything that can happen to it!
She is an angel. |

The
Only Day We Know - "The
Only Day We Know", was
inspired by a colleague who lost her daughter to a tragic car accident and
she was so distraught about the evening her daughter died.
She didn't say goodbye to her or tell her she loved her because she
was not happy about the reason
she went out or the company she was with that night and it haunts her
still. She told me if she had only known it was the last time they would
speak, there were so many things she would have said. |

She
Walks With Weary Eyes - She
Walks With Weary Eyes was inspired by a photograph I saw of my grandmother
and her brood of 13 children on their front lawn, waiting for the
photographer to take the perfect picture.
Her eyes looked so tired, that the song title came immediately. As
it took on life, it became a multi-generational song:
grandmother to my mother, to me and finally to my daughter.
It is a song built on love and pain, and grows to hopefulness for a
better life for each successive generation. |

Show
Me How To Love - "Show Me
How To Love" was written for a college project. It is about how
people can go through a rough time and know first hand that they can be
ignored and fade into the crowd. Then there is the realization that they
can easily ignore others' needs. The character is asking for help to
overcome that blindness. |

Autumn
Song - Autumn Song is a
reflection of the beauty of the autumn years. The inspiration is from my
time spent at Elliot Hospital playing in the hallways while on scholarship
with the Music for Healing and Transition Program, and playing for my dad
at U Mass Medical Hospital before he passed away last spring. I dedicate
this to my mom, and all who are still on the journey. |
